GR99

Toasting with Rioja at Christmas
The land
Located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in the prestigious region of La Rioja, Bodega GR99 benefits from an exceptional winegrowing environment. Its vineyards are situated between the imposing Sierra de Cantabria and the meandering Ebro River, a location that provides optimal conditions for growing grapes. The plots, some with hundred-year-old vines, are planted on clay-limestone soils, rich in nutrients, which give character and complexity to the grapes. The continental climate with Atlantic influences, together with minimal intervention and sustainable agriculture practices, allow us to obtain fruit that faithfully reflects the terroir of the area.
With three wines, three plots and three interpretations of Tempranillo in the same village, we have created something unique.

The winery
GR99 is the fruit of the passion and dedication of Carlos Mendoza and Ana Benés, natives of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. In 2020, driven by the desire to bottle the landscape of their homeland, they founded this project with a clear philosophy: to respect the environment and practice sustainable viticulture, moving towards ecological methods.
The winery focuses on making wines that capture the essence of their environment, combining traditional techniques with a contemporary vision. Each wine is a unique expression of the selected plots, reflecting the diversity and richness of the Rioja terroir.

According to María José Huertas
We tasted with our sommelier the two selected wines from GR99:
- First Impression 2023: This young red, made from 100% Tempranillo, offers an aromatic explosion of fresh red fruits and floral notes. In the mouth, it is lively and fresh, with soft tannins and a balanced acidity that invites further enjoyment. Its label, adorned with a blue eye, symbolizes the importance of the first impression and the visual connection with this wine born in the lands of the Ebro.
- Contemplaciones 2019: This red wine, also a single varietal Tempranillo, has been aged for 11 months in French oak barrels and 12 months in bottle. It displays a modern, light profile, with plenty of fresh fruit and subtle complexity. The label, featuring a brown eye, represents the colors and hues of nature and the seasons in the interior parcels, evoking a deep connection with the vineyard.
